laryngitis symptoms3If you are experiencing a distorting sound from your vocal chords or your voice gets hoarse and weak, or in some cases your voice totally gets lost with some feeling of pain in the throat, then most probably you have laryngitis. These voice problems will be experienced together with some throat discomforts.

Laryngitis, by definition, is the inflammation of the voice box or the larynx which could be due to its overuse, an infection on it, or even an irritation. When there is no abnormality in our vocal chords, our speech is just normal since our vocal chords open and close smoothly. Unlike when the vocal chords are swollen due to inflammation or irritation, it makes our voice distorted.

Generally, laryngitis can be categorized as acute or chronic laryngitis. We can say that a particular laryngitis is acute if this laryngitis lasts for a few days only. However, if the laryngitis lasts for more than 3 weeks, it will fall under the category of chronic laryngitis. The chronic laryngitis occurs mostly in our men during their middle age.

You can also feel a certain pain in your larynx and a sore throat. Normally, you may notice the symptoms related to your voice in the morning particularly when you just wake up. It is hard for you to speak normally in which you must take an extra effort in order for you to speak. Aside from that, you will observe that your voice may not sound as it was before. Other symptoms also include coughing, colds or flu, difficulty in breathing which occurs mostly in children, and the unusual increase in saliva production in your mouth.

In most cases, above symptoms always improve and normally last for just a few days and all of these are just temporary. However, if the symptoms do not improve after a couple of weeks, there is a big possibility that this disease could point to a chronic. That means your larynx could be damaged. In such cases, it is highly recommended that you see your doctor right away to address this problem and to have an immediate treatment or medication. This is because there is a high possibility of developing cancer in your throat.
